Going Green Expo 5-8 June 2008

June 27th, 2008 by Simona

Have you been at the Going Green Expo 2008? We were there with our innovative and ecological products. It made me feel so good when people stopped by, looking for a deal or just for a free and open interest for the environment and its friends. It’s amazing to see children drawing in our bright colours on small “trial” boards.Maybe they will be teachers, and writing with our markers on their big whiteboards at school, they will remember and understand AusPen sincere and ongoing love for the environment.

Why I love my job at AusPen (something a little personal)

Sun Set Over the Pier

Years ago in Western Australia, while sitting in Gino’s on the incredibly static, but famed environment known as “The cappuccino strip” I happened to stumble into a conversation about environmental changes that were occurring in the west (note that this was long before the phrase “Global warming” was coined). This conversation’s focus was on the change in the weather patterns as they related to the Southwest parts of Western Australia.
This is the point at which I began thinking about the effects we are having on our environment and the consequences of those effects, it didn’t take much research to come to the conclusion that in general we use too much & that the shift that we must all be forced to make had begun long ago in the western part of Australia and has yet to begin in my homeland (USA) and my hometown (NYC).
If I only had the information then, that I have now, perhaps I could have lent a hand to changing the attitudes around me… those are just wishes… what could I do?
Now I do have much more information (thanks to resources like Eco buy, Greenpages, SOS save our selves and many others) & a platform albeit limited… so this is why I love my job!

Ok… so now what?

We still have plastic bags, there is still no alternative fuel sources, we still have not made the Changes we must make to clean up our act.

I’ve just been shopping for groceries, as I walked down the many aisles of food & household goods, I couldn’t help but think about how much energy it took to bring this place info being. Shelves, stock, lights… the whole thing. As I picked up my Pasta, lettuce and the rest I tried to consider ways to thin the place out… (not that I get to make those decisions) ways make it more sustainable, I came up with many things… Almost all of which were very impractical, solar lighting, recycled water for the salad spritzers, less items on the shelves.

Have you ever thought about how much stuff there is in your average market It seems to me that before we can cut waste, we must first think of better ways to do what we do. Why are we all so content to let things carry on the way they have, just because they always have?

So know what?… we come up with new ways…ASAP

Ladies and Gentlemen I present … GreenPages Australia!

Green pages

It doesn’t matter what kind of business you have one of the most basic things to understand is that you need friends, colleagues, and to form partnerships in order to make it all work, (hopefully to the mutual benefit of all concerned.

AusPen has many such partners but, some have become distant, like a good friend that has moved a long distance away, well… we can’t have that…can we?

So I think it would be a great thing if I stopped and gave a shout out to some of our friends out there fighting the good fight.

So let’s cast the light on that fount of eco-sustainable knowledge… Greenpages Australia

Let’s face it there is a lot of eco-information out here in cyberspace but you won’t find a site with a more diverse selection of sustainable possibilities than Green pages (plus a few notable celebrity endorsements) from carbon offsetting to videos and a very informative newsletter, there is lots of information you will use everyday.

Hey… don’t take my word for it … go take a look for yourself!

Google – Blackie a new way to conserve!

August 9th, 2007 by admin

Google’s power saving interface Ok... while i may have come up with another name I can't dispute the intent behind Google’s new power conserving page
If what I read is true it takes 74 watts to display a color screen image while “Blackie” uses only 59 a saving of 15 watts!
You can read about it at the We Are What We Do website
Every little bit counts.
Click the link and you can see “Blackie” in all it’s power conserving glory!

Blogroll, community & We are what we do.

August 1st, 2007 by admin

Welcome the the Auspen blog

Now I try hard not to be preachy in these postings (a hard thing for me personally) and I will continue to try.
There is one thing that I will never stop and that is giving a person or organizations their / it’s due portion of praise.
So Check out our Blogroll from time to time and click those links and visit those organizations that are doing their share to bring meaning and/or clarity to sustainability.
Last week I received a phone call from a representitive of “We Are What We Do” for those that don’t know (as I didn’t) this organization seeks to prod us all into doing positive actions on a very personal level.
They have sites up in the UK, Canada, Germany & Australia!
Check out their “Do Something” page it has some great Ideas that might make life that more fulfilling.
That sounds like a real positive idea to me so we’ll link to them and they will in turn link to us so give them a look you might just learn something… I know I did!

Push me pull you

Ok… at this time in history and I guess in all times of stress and upheaval a higher level of co operation is necessary, like the two headed llama in the Doctor Doolittle stories we have got to work together to progress towards our goals…
Ahh… but what are those goals?

Some think that the task is to find a way to heal the planet without making any major alterations to our wasteful lifestyles, to make the world safe for waste again.
Do I even have to say how selfish I think that is?
Speaking for myself , which is all I really can do, I am trying to create a sustainable lifestyle across the board, in all my activities, personal, business, social life where ever I can make adjustments that seem sane and rational I am committed to trying.

However not everyone I meet shares my desires in fact the road blocks to living sustainably can be quite formidable.
It is much easier to be careless than careful this has been a given fact since our species first stood upright, and to my mind that careless impulse is what has been our undoing through all the countless eons.

That’s quite enough of my bummer-ism, so what do we do that will help us all pull together on this issue?
I am a firm believer that information is the key to solving any problem and communication is the method by which we can devise & implement those solutions, so leave a comment to help me stay on point (Push Me) and i’ll do my best to point out the things I think will be of some value (Pull You).
The great thing about co-operation is… every time you give it a try the next time is easier.
It’s a long road to sustainability so let’s share the ride.
